Fitzgerald Theater

Saint Paul's oldest surviving theater, famously home to Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion.

The Fitzgerald Theater is the oldest surviving theater in Saint Paul, originally opened in 1910 as the Sam S. Shubert Theater. Renamed in 1994 in honor of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the theater gained national fame as the broadcast home of Garrison Keillor's beloved radio program "A Prairie Home Companion."

The theater seats approximately 1,000 people in an intimate setting that preserves much of its original Beaux-Arts architectural character. The ornate interior features decorative plasterwork, a graceful balcony, and the warm acoustics that make it an ideal venue for both musical performance and spoken word.

Beyond its association with "A Prairie Home Companion," the Fitzgerald Theater hosts a diverse program of concerts, comedy shows, lectures, and theatrical performances throughout the year. Its downtown location, just a short walk from Cathedral Hill, makes it an accessible cultural destination for neighborhood residents.

The theater's name honors the neighborhood's most famous literary son, connecting the performance tradition to the broader cultural legacy of Cathedral Hill and its association with American arts and letters.
