Penumbra Theatre is one of the most respected African American theater companies in the United States. Founded in 1976 by Lou Bellamy, Penumbra has been dedicated to producing artistically excellent theater that is relevant to the African American community and illuminating for all audiences.

The theater gained national recognition for its acclaimed productions of August Wilson's plays, including several world premieres. Wilson, widely regarded as one of the greatest American playwrights, developed a deep relationship with Penumbra and its ensemble, and the theater's interpretations of his work are considered among the most authoritative.

Penumbra produces a full season of plays each year, mixing new works by emerging playwrights with established classics of the African American dramatic repertoire. The company is also committed to developing new talent through education programs, workshops, and mentorship opportunities.

Located on Selby Avenue, Penumbra is an integral part of the Cathedral Hill cultural landscape and a vital contributor to the Twin Cities' nationally recognized theater community.
