The Commodore Bar & Restaurant
A beautifully restored 1920s Art Deco bar and restaurant in the historic Commodore Hotel, once a Prohibition-era speakeasy.
The Commodore Bar & Restaurant occupies the ground floor of the historic Commodore Hotel at 79 Western Avenue, a landmark building that has been a fixture of the Cathedral Hill neighborhood since the 1920s. The bar's stunning Art Deco interior has been meticulously restored, featuring original terrazzo floors, curved banquettes, and gleaming brass details that transport guests back to the glamour of the Jazz Age.
During Prohibition, the Commodore operated as one of Saint Paul's most notorious speakeasies, frequented by gangsters, bootleggers, and the city's social elite who mingled in its hidden back rooms. F. Scott Fitzgerald was a regular patron during his time in Saint Paul, and the bar's atmosphere of sophisticated rebellion is said to have influenced his portrayal of the roaring twenties.
Today, The Commodore serves as both a craft cocktail bar and a refined dining destination. The cocktail program draws on the classics of the pre-Prohibition and Jazz Age eras — perfectly balanced Manhattans, Sidecars, and house originals that honor the bar's storied past. The food menu features elevated American fare with seasonal ingredients.
The upstairs lounge offers a more intimate setting, while the main bar buzzes with the convivial energy of a neighborhood gathering place. The Commodore stands as a living piece of Cathedral Hill history — a place where the glamour and intrigue of the past meet the vitality of the present.
