An imposing 1887 Romanesque mansion on Summit Avenue, a classic example of Gilded Age residential architecture.

Gallery

Blair House is an imposing Richardsonian Romanesque mansion on Summit Avenue, built in 1887. The house is characterized by its rough-cut stone exterior, massive arched entrance, and the heavy, fortress-like quality that defines the Romanesque Revival style popularized by architect H.H. Richardson.

The mansion was built during the peak of Summit Avenue's development, when the city's wealthiest citizens competed to build the most impressive residences along this grand boulevard. Blair House represents the taste for solid, substantial architecture that conveyed permanence and stability — values prized by the business leaders who built their fortunes during Minnesota's rapid growth.

The house features intricate stonework, decorative carvings, and a turret that provides views along Summit Avenue. Inside, the original woodwork, fireplaces, and spatial arrangement reflect the formal entertaining customs of the Victorian era.

Blair House remains one of the finest examples of Romanesque domestic architecture on Summit Avenue and contributes to the street's remarkable architectural heritage.
