The Dacotah Building, constructed in 1889, represents a significant moment in Saint Paul's urban development. As one of the first luxury apartment buildings in the city, it introduced a new way of living to the residents of Cathedral Hill — offering the convenience and sophistication of apartment life to those who could afford the finest accommodations.
Designed by architect Hermann Kretz, the Dacotah Building features a handsome Romanesque Revival exterior of red brick and brownstone. The building's rounded corner tower, arched windows, and decorative stonework reflect the period's taste for dramatic architectural statement.
The Dacotah's apartments were designed for wealthy tenants who desired elegant living without the responsibilities of maintaining a large house. Each apartment featured spacious rooms, high ceilings, modern plumbing, and the kind of refined detailing expected by the neighborhood's elite residents.
Over the years, the Dacotah Building has been home to many prominent Saint Paul families. Its location at the corner of Western and Selby avenues placed it at the heart of the Cathedral Hill social scene, within easy walking distance of the cathedral, the clubs, and the shops that served the neighborhood.
