F. Scott Fitzgerald Birthplace

The modest rowhouse where the author of The Great Gatsby was born on September 24, 1896.

F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of America's greatest literary voices, was born on September 24, 1896, in this modest second-floor apartment at 481 Laurel Avenue in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood. The building, a Victorian-era rowhouse, stands in quiet contrast to the lavish world Fitzgerald would later immortalize in his fiction.

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald — named after the author of "The Star-Spangled Banner," a distant relative — spent his earliest years in this neighborhood before his family moved several times within Saint Paul. The Fitzgerald family returned to Cathedral Hill repeatedly, and young Scott attended several schools in the area.

The neighborhood's mix of old-money grandeur along Summit Avenue and the more modest homes on surrounding streets profoundly influenced Fitzgerald's understanding of American class divisions. His keen observations of the wealthy Summit Avenue families and his own family's more precarious social position informed the themes of aspiration, wealth, and disillusionment that permeate his greatest works.

The building was saved from demolition in the 1970s and restored as a historic site. Today it operates as a museum and literary center, hosting readings, workshops, and events celebrating Fitzgerald's legacy and American literature. The apartment has been furnished to reflect the period when the Fitzgerald family lived there.

A walking tour connecting Fitzgerald's various Saint Paul residences and haunts begins at the birthplace, offering visitors a chance to see the city through the eyes of the young writer who would go on to define the Jazz Age.
