Summit Avenue Walking & Biking Path

A 4.5-mile tree-lined path along Summit Avenue, perfect for walking, jogging, and cycling.

The Summit Avenue Walking and Biking Path runs the full 4.5-mile length of Summit Avenue, providing one of the finest urban walking and cycling experiences in the Twin Cities. The path follows the boulevard's generous median and sidewalks, shaded by a canopy of mature elm and oak trees that create a cathedral-like effect in summer.

The path passes by more than 370 historic homes and buildings, making it both a recreational route and an architectural tour. Walkers and cyclists can admire the progression of styles from the grandest mansions near the cathedral to the more varied residential architecture further west, all while enjoying the peaceful, tree-canopied atmosphere.

The path is popular year-round. In spring and summer, it's alive with joggers, dog walkers, families with strollers, and cyclists. In autumn, the changing leaves create a spectacular display of color. Even in winter, hardy Minnesotans bundle up to walk or cross-country ski along the snow-covered boulevard.

Summit Avenue's path connects to the broader Twin Cities trail network, including paths leading to the Mississippi River, downtown Saint Paul, and neighboring communities. It's an essential piece of the region's recreational infrastructure and one of the most pleasant places to be outdoors in Saint Paul.
